Mountains stretch down to coastal plains, which hug the curves of over 100 pristine beaches, all gazing out towards the stunning waters of the South Coast. This is Shoalhaven.
And yes, the name is quite accurate. Whether you’re passing through for the day or setting out for a long weekend of bliss and beauty, this shoal-dotted region is a literal haven – a picturesque and peaceful expanse nestled towards the southern reaches of NSW, with offerings that are as diverse as they are diverting.
Small towns, big love
Amble down the coast with the backdrop of hinterland and ocean, and stop in at any of the unique little towns that accent the region. From the boutique-laden streets of Berry (a location as sweet as it sounds) to the Maritime Museum in Huskisson, the stone turreted Hampden Bridge of Kangaroo Valley to the Gondwana Fossil walk in Ulladulla, there’s historic charm aplenty and something for everyone in the attractions of each village – and small-town hospitality is in large supply. With many spots in the area featuring on the finalist lists of Australia’s Top Tourism awards, a visit to any (or all!) is a holiday must.

Natural beauty
There’s no better spot to get your nature fix than this idyllic patch where bush meets beach. Whether you’re in search of soothing time out or an active getaway, the South Coast has it all.
Stand-up paddleboard on the crystalline waters of Jervis Bay, or fully immerse yourself and go snorkelling at Murrays Beach in the world-class Booderee National Park. From May to November, ready your binoculars and gaze eastward from either Point Perpendicular Lighthouse or Cape St George Lighthouse to spot whales playfully breaching on their annual migration.
Starting in Vincentia, take the easy stroll (or bike ride!) along the White Sands Walk, admiring the glittering beaches that beckon as you pass (natural quartz is what gives the sand such a sparkling effect). Then loop back via the Scribbly Gum Track to get a taste of tall forest and lush woodland, with the chance to spy some furry locals – including possums and gliders.
For caves, rock platforms, stone stairways, and stunning vegetation, visit the Bomaderry Creek Walking Track. A picnic area conveniently graces the start of the trail, so you can fuel up before you set off, and seats are dotted along the length, making it ideal for the whole family. Even your pooch is welcome on this adventure (as long as they remain leashed at all times).
If you like your holidays with more of an adrenaline hit, companies like Big Nature Adventures can provide memorable year-round expeditions; from hiking in the remote Budawangs to climbing and abseiling on one of the many incredible local cliffs – breathtaking and heart-thumping views await!
For the ultimate sojourn in nature’s arms, book a glamping stay in the region – the blissful combination of contained luxury and wilderness.
A feast for all
Not only known for its dreamy scenery, natural wonders, and friendly village vibes, Shoalhaven is foodie heaven. Home to some of the best restaurants and eateries in NSW, the region also plays host to delicious events throughout the year – such as the South Coast Food and Wine Festival, the Shoalhaven Autumn Celebration of Food, and Huskisson Beer & BBQ Festival; each offering an ideal opportunity for those looking to explore the region’s culinary scene. If high-end dining is your flavour, South on Albany, Berry, and Bangalay, Shoalhaven Heads, are sure to impress – and will cater to plant-based eaters with notice. Completely vegetarian with vegan options, Serotonin on Currambene is located in the century-old cottage at 13 Currambene Street in Huskisson and offers laidback dining in the ambience of your choice: from cocktail lounge to a pet-friendly patio.
If taking part in a tipple is on your getaway itinerary, the region has a range of gorgeous venues, from cellar doors to distilleries. Drop in and sample a drop at Cupitt’s Estate and bathe in the uniquely stunning views of the vineyard, the Budawang Ranges, and Burrill Lake. Live music, an earth-to-table philosophy, and vegan wines are all on offer here. For sumptuous spirits and seasonal liqueurs made with Aussie-grown botanicals, small-batch distillery Old Salt in South Nowra is also well worth the trip.
Sweet tooth? With decadent concoctions like the lemon and berry raw ‘cheezecake’, The Treehouse Café in Ulladulla boasts a variety of delicious treats that are vegan and gluten-free. If you’re looking for an even more organic foodie experience, you can head to Clyde River Berry Farm to pick berries straight from the bushes, visit the timber-milling town of Wandandian for stone fruit, or attend the autumn chestnut harvest at Sassafras Nuts.
