Letting go of people or situations that make us unhappy is one of the most difficult challenges a person can face. Follow our guide to cutting the ties that bind.

Have you ever had your heart broken and thought you would never get over it? Are you stuck in an unfulfilling job, yet the thought of breaking free feels like stepping into the abyss? Having to break away from any situation can be hard. Even if the situation is toxic, and you know that no good is coming from it, the invisible cords that tie us to things that no longer serve us are incredibly strong. But you can release the hold that relationships and situations have on you, by using a powerful technique that cuts the ties that bind you.

‘Cutting the ties that bind’ means making the conscious decision to cut loose from unhappy situations. You may already know the phrase: ‘Be bold and mighty forces will come to your aid.’ This is exactly what happens when you break away from the things that are holding you back.

Fiona Hickman-Taylor, author of Six Spiritual Steps to Mend a Broken Heart and founder of organic clothing business Earthmonk, says: ‘Cutting the ties that bind is about being proactive, taking responsibility and letting go of the things and people in your life that no longer serve or benefit you. It’s about setting your intentions on the very deepest level of your being – and the best thing is that you don’t need to tell a soul for it to work.’

Fiona advises using the following visualisation to cut the ties that bind, stop your suffering, and begin a new era of freedom, independence and the power to create the life you want.

Find a quiet moment when you won’t be disturbed. Turn off anything distracting.

Sit down, give yourself permission to relax, and close your eyes.

Let your mind focus on the flow of your breath in and out of your body.

Visualise a golden rope laid out in front of you in the shape of a large figure of eight. Visualise yourself stepping into the nearest end of the loop.

Imagine the situation or person you want to detach from taking its place in the other end of the loop, along with anything you want to let go of.

When everything you want to free yourself of is in the other loop, imagine that a magnificent sword has appeared next to you. Take it and cut through the centre of the figure of eight where the loops cross over. Say out loud or in your mind: ‘I set you free, and in doing so I set myself free.’ Notice the fact that you have severed the link and that the other loop is now cut free and is drifting away from you, getting smaller.

Stand for a few moments alone in your solitary, golden loop and ask for healing. Imagine the universe pouring golden light on your head, which flows into your body, washing away all the negativity of the situation you have just detached from. Imagine that the light forms a golden cloak around you.

See yourself shining brightly until you are a radiant light. Slowly, begin to return your sense to the room and open your eyes.

Remember – the unconscious mind doesn’t know the difference between real and imaginary. As far as your mind, body and spirit are concerned, you have truly severed your link and cut yourself free. A new beginning awaits you.

In the days ahead, embed the exercise by imagining yourself separated from the attachment. Remember to remain protected by keeping yourself within your shield of radiant light.
